Communication and The Roles a Father Has

Communication is an important, and arguably the most important, aspect of any healthy relationship, including family relations. Most families struggle to have open and honest conversations about hard topics like finances, debt, or important family decisions. However, it is crucial for every member of the family to be aware of such issues and involved in the process in order to maintain a peaceful and happy family environment. In this blog post, we will discuss how and why communication in the family about finances, debt, and important family decisions is so vital to a healthy dynamic within the home.

One of the reasons why communication in the family about finances is so important is because it helps to promote financial awareness and responsibility within family members. When every member of the family understands the family's financial situation, it becomes easier to make informed decisions that benefit everyone. It also helps the children in the family to develop good money management habits as they grow up watching a good money role model, which can be set by the parents.

Similarly, talking about debts with family members can help to reduce stress and anxiety that comes with it. If just one family member is holding on to that stress and carrying that load alone, it can be very detrimental to the family if that burden becomes too much to handle. Sharing financial obligations and discussing ways to manage them together can be so helpful in developing a plan of action that will work best for everyone.

Communication about big decisions within the family helps to build trust and respect among family members. If everyone feels included in the conversation, you give everyone the chance to share their feelings about the situation and avoid misunderstandings which prevents conflict further down the road. Conversations like this could include discussing major family purchases, planning vacations, or even making decisions about the education of the children.

When communication is effective, family members feel valued and respected, which promotes a sense of belonging and unity. This helps to build strong family relationships that can withstand any challenges that come their way.

When it comes to communication and decision making within the home, a lot of that role is placed on the father because he is typically the one leading the house. Although, the father also plays other important roles within the family besides solely “head of the household”. Fathers play a critical role in the lives of their children. I have included below just a couple important roles they play, out of the many important duties a father has:

1. Providing emotional support: Fathers often provide emotional support to their children. They offer a different type of support than mothers can offer and can help provide a healthy balance in their children's lives. Kids need both a mother’s and a father’s love to develop healthy life skills and emotional complexes.

2. Being a role model: Fathers are such important role models for their children, particularly for their sons. Young boys need a good male role model that they can look up to, who will emulate the best characteristics of what a good, strong man looks and acts like. Children often look up to their fathers and try to emulate their same behavior.

3. Encouraging independence: Fathers can encourage their children to be independent and to take risks. This is crucial for children to develop a sense of self esteem and good decision making. They provide guidance and support while allowing their children to make their own choices and learn from their mistakes.

4. Instilling discipline and responsibility: Fathers play such an important role in instilling discipline and responsibility in their children. They are responsible for many things an play  a big role in setting that example. If a father is not being responsible in whatever context it may be it can set the child up for failure. They set boundaries and enforce rules with the kind of “tough love” that helps children learn how to manage their behavior and make good decisions while growing up. Fathers are not perfect and so sometimes they make choices that they have to take responsibility for their actions and be mature enough to handle it and stand up. By taking these responsibilities seriously things will be ok.

5. Providing financial support: Fathers are usually the ones providing financial support to their children and wives, which ensures that their families basic needs are met. There are some situations where there is only the mom in the household who has to come up with these. This support can also emulate itself in the form of paying for education, healthcare, housing, and other necessities. We need the Father to provide this to help develop a sturdy foundation.
